This social history of the north-western corner of City Rise tells the stories of those who lived there, of the military barracks erected on the Town Belt in 1861 and of the neighbourhood shops, pubs and schools. A diverse community, its residents included working and middle-class families as well as men of means such as brewer Charles Speight and solicitor William Robert Brugh.
